In 2025, Roche announced a new single-molecule technique called Sequencing by Expansion, which inserts large engineered molecules called ‘Xpandomers’ between nucleotides for more accurate detection via nanopore. Both new techniques and refinements to existing methods are aimed at further decreasing the cost of sequencing, with some groups looking to read an entire human genome for $100 or less. Ultima Genomics met this target with its UG100 sequencing machine, unveiled in 2022 and shipped in 2024. Element Biosciences’ VITARI system, announced in February and expected to ship in the second half of 2026, achieved the same price point with a smaller device. The $100 price tag advertised by these companies includes only the consumables used by the machine itself, excluding labor, data analysis, and other costs.
